Inspiring STEM Careers

On 27th September, FGS hosted an inspiring Primary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Day in conjunction with Wellacre Academy.

Over 400 Year 6 pupils from primary schools including Acre Hall, Flixton Primary, Gorse Hill, Highfield, Kingsway, Moss Park, St Michael’s, Urmston Juniors and Woodhouse attended the event with the girls coming to FGS and the boys going to Wellacre.

Flixton Girls and Wellacre challenged pupils from across Trafford to dress up as any professional figure or career in the STEM industry and learn more about future opportunities in this field.  The costumes were amazing and we were so pleased by the effort made by everybody who dressed up!

The aspirational event welcomed future scientists, nurses, dentists, surveyors, mechanics, astronauts, surgeons, pilots and many more. Icons in the field, such as renowned scientist Albert Einstein, as well as famous inventor and engineer Nikola Tesla inspired some young pupils.

Pupils visited a range of curriculum areas at both schools, enjoying a host of engaging, interactive and exciting lessons and activities, focusing on STEM themes to inspire learning.

Activities included making fruity batteries in Science, and completing coding activities in Computer Science.  In Maths, pupils were sent on a treasure hunt around the school to crack the codes and find the treasure.

Ms Powell Director of Health & Wellbeing commented: ‘Thank you so much to everybody who was involved in the primary day today.  The feedback we have received from all of the lessons was excellent.  It was great to see so many of our future pupils so enthusiastically taking part in the activities of the day!

Wellacre Principal Miss Wicks said:

“The atmosphere today has been fantastic; there was a great buzz around the school as the wonderful array of young STEM professionals arrived!  At Wellacre, we want to show that anything is possible for our students and it was amazing to see so many STEM career opportunities represented.

“The Primary Day is an important part of both schools transition programme through which we aim to build pupil confidence and settle any nerves ahead of the move from primary school to secondary.”

Caitlin from Acre Hall said “My favourite class was Maths.  I enjoyed solving the problems and puzzles, and working as a team.”

Rosie from Acre Hall enjoyed the Art class and really liked building the structures and being an Architect for the day.”

Participating schools posted positive feedback on social media:
