Flixton Girls student’s year 13 Michelle Galliani and her sister Genevieve Galliani from year 9 have both achieved sporting success in Taekwondo.

Michelle has been involved in Taekwondo for the last four years following an after-school activity run by Mike Greenwood, a qualified Taekwondo specialist. Michelle followed in her footsteps just twelve months later.

The sisters train four times a week with Manchester Sport Taekwondo team, based at Urmston Leisure Centre. This is a traditional form of Taekwondo which has taught both girls self-discipline, self-defence and improved their overall confidence. They have competed at a variety of competitions, around the UK and overseas, including Spain and most recently Milan, Italy.

Competing in Milan at the European Championships both sisters achieved great success – Genevieve won double bronze junior (ages 13-17) in red belt for fighting and pattern technique becoming bronze champion. Michelle, who is also FGS 6th Form Deputy Head Girl, won gold in red belt (ages 18-35) meaning she is the overall European champion!

Michelle commented: ‘My training for this competition has been hampered by a knee injury but I didn’t let it stop me from aiming high and achieving my best. I found out about the sport at an after school club at FGS and it has improved my confidence and really allowed me to come out of my shell.’

Genevieve said: ‘I got involved in Taekwondo as a form of keep fit and self-defence, really enjoy the sport and the discipline helps me focus across everything I do.’

Upon hearing the news Team GB Taekwondo tweeted: ‘Great to see pupils from @FlixtonGS having taken up #Taekwondo! Well done girls on your achievements!’

Form tutor 9NH Rosemary Statter said: ‘We all so proud of Genevieve’s two bronze medals, the whole form celebrated her achievements.’
