The FGS Music department have successfully run their third annual ‘Young Musician of the Year’ competition. Performers split into categories for instrumentalists - intermediate (grade1-3) and advanced (grade 3 or above), plus vocalists from both KS3 (years 7 & 8) and KS4 (years 9 & 12).

Semi-finals took place during April with students from all year groups giving many strong performances. However, numbers had to be whittled down and this year twenty-two finalists made the grade. All the girls who have reached the final prepared for this event within their own time and with little or no assistance from school staff; which shows great dedication to their chosen discipline.

Finalist were: instrument intermediate – Nancy Jeffers (piano – grade 2), Selkie Huk (drums – grade 2) and Surel Hilton (cornet); instrument advanced – Anna Gilbody (violin – grade 6), Ella Fagan (drums – grade 4) and Sinead Brooker (piano – grade 6); ensemble – Ava Gandy and Annabelle Hustwitt (ukulele & vocals), Abi Gilpin and Lily Rose (vocalists), Sofie Bingham, Lily Rose and Surel Hilton (vocalists), ‘Dynamix’ – Isabelle Rose, Izzy Reynolds, Ona Raphane and Amy Marie Williamson (vocalists); KS3 vocalists – Jasmine Douglas, Amber Rafter, Sofia Bingham, Annabelle Hustwitt, Lilly Rose and Namumba Kawala; KS4 vocalists – Isobelle Rose, Izzy Reynolds, Ona Raphane, Ellena Wood, Amy Marie Williamson and Sadie Telfor.

The final, attended by family and friends of the finalists and year 7 students and staff, was a pure delight. Year 7’s were inspired by our talented performers and shown what can be achieved with drive and determination.

This year was no different and allowed even more girls to showcase their musical talent. Congratulations to all the competitors, they made it really challenging to decide who should be crowned the overall winners.  Well done girls and I look forward to next year. Thanks to Graham Smith at Trafford Music Services for his continued support in judging our event.’

Mr Graham Smith, Trafford Music Services and judge commented: ‘Another excellent display of talented students, which made the judging process a very close call. I look forward to seeing more inspiring performances again next year.

Parents and grandparents enjoyed the show, with comments including : ‘ Thanks for a lovely afternoon we thoroughly enjoyed it.’ ‘Great event, showcasing talent and boosting self-confidence.’

Mrs Hilton said: ‘Flixton Girls has a heart of fabulous talent, this has been a really inspiring and emotional event; must remember to bring my tissues next time!’

This annual event has seen a growth of competitors’ year on year. We hope to see even more competitors take up the challenge and enter next year’s competition. It truly is empowering to see the progression of talent as our students work at their chosen discipline. We look forward to hearing many of these talented students at the forth-coming Summer Concert on 12th July.
