During my time at Flixton Girls School I was always encouraged to venture outside my comfort zone and strive to be my best.
Upon leaving Sixth Form, I realised that this was one of the most important life lessons I had been taught and pursuing a career in a male-dominated industry was not only possible but has amounted to endless opportunities.
I'm an apprentice quantity surveyor working for a local construction company, helping to deliver high value and complex construction projects in the North West of England. Having the opportunity to experience the real world of work whilst obtaining a degree at University is both challenging and rewarding. I am also completing a RICS chartership, meaning I have the potential to be an accredited quantity surveyor with an internationally recognised organisation.
Even though my interest in construction didn't materialise until my first year at sixth form, teachers at FGS have been supportive and positive of my career choice. FGS has taught me that you're capable of more than you know and having the confidence to put yourself out there is just the first step to success.
My ability to consider the career prospects in construction has allowed me to plan my future and to continue my progression working in the industry.
My advice to current students would be to never let other people's opinions of you stop you from doing what you enjoy. Doing what you love and being a success is the best thing you can do.
