20th Anniversary of World Book Day
Posted at 10:50 am on 9th March, 2017
Flixton Girls celebrated the 20th Anniversary of World Book Day with a host of activities including character dress-up, quizzes and book swaps. Those students who took part in the dress-up activities helped raise funds for ‘Book Aid International’, which sends a new book to a library in Africa for every £2 raised.
Students in years 7 to 9 used their readathon to raise money for books for children in hospital. The readathon will continue throughout the coming weeks with students obtaining their own sponsorship for each book or the total number of books they complete over this period.
The whole event was aimed at further promoting literacy both in and outside of school. Here at FGS one of the ways we promote reading is through our DEAR time ‘Drop Everything And Read’ scheme.
Many students participated in multiple activities before, on and following World Book Day with lots of students and staff using the budget-beating dress-up ideas; which provided an array of excellent outfits including Queen of Hearts, Cruella Deville, Sherlock Holmes, BFG and Dumbledore.
Donations raised over £140.00 for ‘Book Aid International’ and we thank everyone for their support and exceptional outfits.
