Alumni Afternoon Tea

Flixton Girls School will again be opening its doors to all our alumni – ex-students, staff, teachers and governors on Saturday 24th March 2-4pm.

Ahead of this annual event some alumni members organised their own “mini reunion” to set the scene. A small group of ex-students and a staff member, who attended FGS between 1967 to 1972 met for afternoon tea at Lily’s Café in Urmston. For some this was the first time they’d met since leaving school over 46 years ago! They were joined by Janet Howsam, first year and fifth year form tutor and ex-Maths teacher to many of the group.

This was a great opportunity to have a catch up and to reminisce about how times have changed; especially the skills they’d been taught in domestic science e.g. laundering a tray cloth, starching a shirt collar and being able to make an apron. Some of the attendees still have their own aprons made during the lessons, whilst others brought along old school magazines to review.

Although many of the group have stayed in the local area, some travelled from further afield. Margaret Priestley now lives in Ormskirk whilst her twin Gillian Priestley, lives in Rochdale.  Hazel Davies (1971 Head Girl) came from Leyland, Preston. Furthest away was Jane Balance who lives in Cairo. Christine Pegg even thought of Face-Timing from Australia! Both Christine and Jane attended the same primary school, along with Kath Harding and Bev Haslam - making it a primary school reunion as well.

Following further education at local colleges the group have gone onto a variety of careers ranging from nursing, banking, librarian, secretarial, retail, teaching and civil service. Many are now happily enjoying retirement, grandchildren and opportunities for travel.

Their meet-up was a big success with everyone vowing to repeat this again in the future. We look forward to seeing all our ex-students, staff, teachers and governors at our school event on 24th March.
