Providing our students with relevant life skills and experiences, which enables them to make choices for their future education and career, is at the heart of our school ethos. At Flixton Girls School (FGS) our careers and enterprise events empower students to visualise where their aspirational goals can take them, and this week saw another full day of activities across all year groups from 7 to 11.

Year 7 and 8 students were immersed in a Dragons Den style national “Tycoon Challenge”. Groups formulated ideas and researched concepts for their proposed business plan before preparing their pitch to present their findings for the judging panel. They did really well, and we discovered some budding entrepreneurs!

Year 9 participated in STEAM related subjects based around developing a home insulation system designed to save money whilst providing a healthier and more comfortable indoor environment. They applied the science of heat flow to determine best insulators and conductors as well as engaging in discussions regarding renewable energy sources. Mathematics skills were applied to consider the volume of space within our homes, and they considered the suitability of a variety of potential materials to use.

Year 10 and 11 accessed online “Unifrog” activities to support them with creating their own CV, which they can use for future college, university, and employment applications. In addition, they had a carousel of sessions on teamwork activities, presentations on apprenticeships and study skills, as well as access to our fantastic careers fair featuring over 40 external representatives across a wide range of educational and employment sectors from the armed services to the NHS, accountancy to ICT, there was something for everyone.

FGS Careers Coordinator Mrs Bates said, ‘Thank you to all those who took the time to attend today's event and deliver workshops for our students; we really do appreciate your efforts. We have had a tremendous day and the students got so much out of it. The power of an event like this, to inspire young people and enable them to make informed choices, cannot be underestimated.  It is so important to support them to set targets and achieve their goals.’

Mrs Bates and FGS Enterprise and Careers Champion Mrs Holt, wish to thank all the students and staff for their energy and commitment in ensuring this event ran smoothly, as well as thanking all the external providers for their resources and attendance at this full day event.

Feedback from participants, parents and carers included, ‘Thank you to all employers and providers for taking the time out of your busy schedules to share careers advice.’ ‘This event has helped me to feel less confined, understand what I can achieve and consider a much wider career perspective.’ ‘All the students have been polite and inquisitive about their future career plans – it has been a wonderful day meeting FGS student.’
