Go Digital

FGS year 7 students were invited to participate in the Greater Manchester Digital Skills programme. This exciting new programme is being rolled out across Greater Manchester to develop the next generation of digital talent and is backed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Students participated in a one day industry-led inspirational 'digital making and marketing' skills session which included an introduction to coding "microbits" plus creating and editing video footage. This programme enables students, from an early age, to get excited about their own digital skills by bringing the curriculum and their career pathways to life.

There is widening digital skills gap within industry, which is impacting on the performance of local companies, as they struggle to recruit local talent. Additionally the gender gap grows ever wider with just 19% of tech roles in the North West being taken by women.

At FGS we want our students to gain hands-on experience of working with digital and technology organisations, whilst also meeting role models from these organisations to empower them to join these industries in the future.

All our students were actively engaged throughout the day and enjoyed the variety of different tasks on offer. They all agreed that the event really opened their eyes to the different roles and aspects of the digital industry.

Mr Gill IT Teacher commented: 'Go Digital is a great opportunity for students to see the link between computing and creative subjects giving them the chance to be creative, using the latest technologies and linking this to future careers.'

We hope to continue our involvement with the #GMDigitalSkills programme, working with other schools at the second phase of the programme, where a smaller group of students will be able to extend their skills future into the digital world.
