Science lessons at FGS took on a busking theme earlier this week as part of the Great Science Share. Students were asked to master an activity, explain it to classmates; as well as performing the activity on fellow students.

The aim of the event was to get as many young people as possible to share the science that they enjoy and create a real buzz during Greater Manchester’s year as the European City of Science. During 2016 there has been a host of scientific knowledge brought to our city.

Each busking activity was created around science, technology, engineering and maths based challenges. Our students really got involved in the activities and Mrs Badawy Head of Science said ‘The students had a blast sharing science. There was such a buzz in the Science department.’

All students thoroughly enjoyed the activities,  style of the lessons and wished to express their feedback:

Chelsea Clowes – Year 8

“It’s been one of the most fun lessons. We’ve really enjoyed doing lots of different experiments and learning the science behind them”

Catalina David – Year 9

“I think the Great Science Share is a really good idea. I especially enjoyed learning about the different scientists from Manchester. I had no idea there were so many!”

Jodie Revy – Year 9

“The busking activities we tried were challenging and really got us thinking about the science behind them”

Jamie Greenwood – Year 9

“I think it’s great that we are working together and sharing science experiences with other schools in Greater Manchester – rather than competing against them!”

We aim to empower our students to reach outside their comfort zones and enrich their learning by involving them in these types of events. We would encourage them to emerse themselves further into the sciences and experience all the activities around Manchester being European City of Science  2016, see manchestersciencecity.com.
