Junior Maths Challenge
Posted at 1:40 pm on 7th May, 2019
FGS year 8 and 9 students rose to the Maths challenge and attended the University of Manchester to participate in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust team competition earlier this term.
Maths Teacher Ms Harwood escorted year 8 students Isabelle Rose, Hannah Warburton and Millie Hughes and year 9 student Iman Ahmed to the event hosted by the University of Manchester in conjunction with UK Maths Trust and Further Maths Support Programme.
The girls put their problem solving skills to the test by competing against other teams from twenty other schools from the Greater Manchester area. Each round consisted of a variety of question types including ‘Crossnumbers’, a numerical crossword, ‘Shuttle’, pairs work on alternate questions where the answers relate to the previous answers; and ‘Relay’, incorporating problem solving, as well as movement, creating a lively activity.
Ms Harwood said ‘The girls worked extremely well together and demonstrated excellent teamwork and resilience. They thoroughly enjoyed the day, including competing against over 20 other schools from the Greater Manchester area. The year 8 pupils are excited at the prospect of competing again next year!’
Imam commented: ‘You get used to working with the same people, so the mathematical collaboration was great.’
The girls all agreed it was a great experience, which allow them to show off their classroom skills and work as a team. It was good to see how other schools competed.
Well done ladies you did the school proud and we look forward to more Maths Challenges for both junior and senior students over the coming months and years.
