Almost a hundred students from across Trafford Primary Schools recently graduated from a year long Leadership Academy run by the Healthy Learning Trust Sports Partnership and Trafford School Sports Partnership, in conjunction with Manchester United Football Foundation.

The Academy was launched at Old Trafford football ground back in November, where over twenty seven individual primary schools signed up their students to participate. The event included practical workshops covering organisational skills and games ideas. Plus inspirational guest speaker Kiera Byland,  triple gold medalist at the Special Olympics, shared her journey into sport and the importance of being active.

Following this initial training day the students completed a series of tasks from their log books and attended further training sessions. This culminated in the new leaders delivering a Fred Fun Day to children from other local Primary Schools, escorted by Fred the Red.

In addition to running events each of the leaders also supported their school teachers by championing health and wellbeing at their own school and ensuring they and their classmates are active for at least sixty minutes per day. Each student produced a portfolio of their work which they shared with the whole group during the graduation ceremony.

The graduation ceremony celebrated their progress throughout the year with a slide show of photographs before each child was presented with their certificate and goody bag.

Libby from St Mary’s C of E said: ‘I have really enjoyed being part of the leadership academy. I have learnt lots of games and it makes me feel proud when I see the younger children having fun playing them.’
