Year 7 and 8 students from Flixton Girls School (FGS) were visited by the British Aerospace Engineering systems team roadshow to discuss math and science in everyday life, linking in particular to engineering and work done by BAE, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.

It was great to resume this face to face interactive STEM presentations with our younger student year groups, as they haven’t been able to experience these over the last couple of years. This year’s roadshow centred around ‘Magnetism’ and how they are used throughout our everyday lives and more specifically within the BAE, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force engineering systems. The presenters where able to demonstrate engaging and relevant experiments bringing the subject matter to life for the audience.

The roadshow highlighted to students how their classroom learnings are usable skills which can be applied to their future education, apprenticeships and career aspirations. By expanding our student’s knowledge and understanding of the world around them, they will consider the variety of careers available within engineering and additional STEM related subjects. Providing aspirational and empowering enrichment activities we aim to put more women into the engineering careers.

The BAE roadshow team commented how both the student groups engaged with the performs and appeared to enjoy enriching their classroom studies. Students comments included:

‘WOW I want to be an engineer.’

‘This was a great Science lesson.’

‘This was both educational and fun, win, win!’

Science Teacher Miss Valentine commented, ‘The Year 7 & 8 students thoroughly enjoyed their visit from the BAE Roadshow team, which wonderfully tied together the science they learn about magnetism in lessons with the world of Engineering and Technology. This was my first experience of this roadshow performance and I hope we can continue more of these over the coming years.’
