Pedal Power Prevails

Posted at 9:22 am on 5th October, 2020

Pedal power prevails in the distribution of our partner primary publications; as Flixton Girls School enlist the services of our local community bike delivery service. Urmston Bike Deliveries, a recently launched volunteer led initiative aims at assisting Urmston to become a greener town by providing a collection and delivery service for our school newsletters.

The delivery service, launched in September, encourages local people to leave their cars at home and reduce their carbon footprint. Their services were very much appreciated in the run up to the schools new ‘Virtual Open Event’ and distribution of the school marketing materials to our new potential parents, carers and students. Our virtual tour can be access from: https://www.flixtongirls.com/news-and-events/latest-news-and-upcoming-events/virtual-open-day/

Irina Ruseva - the community scheme’s founder - was inspired during lockdown to create the scheme. ‘Lots of people began walking and cycling more during lockdown, I wanted to do something that would help people keep doing this when lockdown lifted. Rather than having to take the car on a short trip to Urmston town centre, a local bike delivery scheme helps people leave their car at home and walk or cycle into the town centre, we can deliver their purchases for them.’

With the aid of an electric cargo bicycle - loaned to the group by Transport for Greater Manchester - and their own adapted bicycles, the small team of volunteer riders has cycled for miles during the scheme’s first few weeks.  Helping local businesses deliver bread and beer to homes across the town, and this most recent partnership with FGS; to deliver newsletters to primary schools across Urmston and Stretford.

The not-for-profit group aims to connect with more businesses and organisations in the area, increasing their weekly deliveries and helping the town’s residents become less car dependent.  They have also advertised at the local market to deliver produce direct to shoppers’ homes.
