FGS Sixth Formers rose to the Maths challenge and attended the University of Manchester, Great Hall to participate in the Senior Maths Challenge earlier this term.

Mrs Statter, Maths Teacher, escorted year 12 students Katie Greer, Farah Kaye and year 13 students Ambur Parkes-Ainsworth and Fatima Mazhar to the event hosted by the University of Manchester in conjunction with UK Maths Trust and Further Maths Support Programme.

The girls put their problem solving skills to the test by competing against other teams from  other top Sixth Forms from the Greater Manchester area. They enjoyed producing some impressive maths solutions against the clock and worked well collaboratively.

Mrs Statter said ‘From such a fiercely competitive regional heat the girls competed well and really got stuck in with all the challenges. Although they didn’t make the top three they did our school proud.’

Fatima commented ‘It got us talking together about the maths; you get used to working with the same people, so the mathematical collaboration was great.’

The girls all agreed the event provided ‘the most challenging maths they had ever seen.’

We are looking forward to receiving Sixth Form applications from the current year 11 mathematicians looking to build towards future success in this challenge next year! Deadline date for applications is Friday 1st December.

Watch out for the Junior Maths Challenge in early 2018.
