At Flixton Girls School, our students fully embrace their extra-curricular sports and look forward to showing off their sporting skills during matches and fixtures organised through our PE and Sports staff.

Last term our students have participated in a huge variety of sporting activities and competitions including basketball, swimming, football, cross-country, netball and athletics. Below is a run-down of all our team-sporting achievements:

Basketball Yr 7 8.jpg   Athletics team Nov 2019.jpg

Year 7/8 Basketball team represented the Toronto Raptors in the first leg of the Basketball England Junior NBA competition. For most of the team this was their first ever taste of competition having only started playing basketball in September.  All games were very close with FGS winning one out of three. All the girls are very excited to participate in the next stage of the competition after Christmas.

The Year 8/9 Athletics team narrowly missed a medal position, in a very competitive field. All our students performed brilliantly with some competing outside of their strongest event to support the team. Jessica Rimmer outshone the field in the 60m hurdles resulting in a gold medal winning performance.

The Under 15’s Futsal football team saw Year 9/10 students playing fabulously throughout each of their games. Stand out performances came from Evie Peet and Grace Fox who scored lots of goals during the three games. Winning two out of three games meant the team came second overall, but it was a close fought competition.

In the English Schools FA Cup fixtures, the teams all performed well, reaching the second round in all Under 12’s, 15’s & 16’s. The Greater Manchester School cup fixtures continue with the Quarter finals in January for our Under 12’s & 14’s teams.

Year 7/8 students entered their first Trafford Swimming event and performed well. They are a very talented group of young ladies and used both skill and tactics to outwit their opponents. With this impressive performance, they finishing second overall. Year 9/10 also gave a gutsy performance, adapting to strokes outside of their comfort zone and working together against swimmers from both regional and national level.

Year 7B, 8A and 10A Netball Team won the Trafford Group A/B leagues with another solid team performances. All teams have worked well together, especially the year 10’s who absolutely deserve their successes after four years of hard work.

A mixed team of students from across all year groups entered the Trafford Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. The team performed brilliantly in freezing conditions, becoming the 2019 Champions and being selected to represent Trafford.  Year 10 Olivia Russell gained second place, year 9 Imogen Davenport tenth place, year 10 Sophia Gilbert sixteenth place and year 7 Sophie Bowman fourteenth place.

Very well done to all our sporting participants, these are fantastic results and show how dedication, determination and resilience really influences the outcomes. Keep practicing, attending extra-curricular clubs and showing the PE staff your determination and we wish you all the very best with future competitions.
