Star Games
Posted at 1:52 pm on 9th May, 2018
All year 8 students at FGS have the opportunity of getting involved with the ‘Star Student’game in conjunction with Greater Manchester Higher Education – Aiming Higher. This is a collaboration of universities and further education colleges from across Greater Manchester - working together to provide high quality outreach activities for local schools and colleges. GM Higher aims to improve the provision of information, advice and guidance about progression routes to higher education (HE) and improved information about the variety of HE options for learners and their key influencers.
Flixton Girls School has a careers programme that helps students make the right choices about their future career pathways and the ‘Star Student’ game gives our students the opportunity to speak to student ambassadors from The University of Manchester. These events are important to our students, allowing them to ask real life university students questions about which GCSE subjects and A-levels they studied and what their futures career aspirations are. Career aspirations are closely linked with educational choices, as once a student has an idea of their future career, they can make informed choices about which subjects to study.
‘Star Student’ is a huge floor game using students as human counters. As the game is played students collect star awards and the team with the most counters wins. Participant Isabel Munday said ‘I thought it was a very good and it opened my eyes to university and what it is all about. The game was done in a fun way and I was learning a lot whilst doing it’.
